Savannah, Ga (WTGS FOX 28) — Savannah Fire & Emergency Services investigators are looking into an early morning deadly house fire on the city’s east side.
Savannah firefighters were dispatched to 2111 South Fernwood Drive just after 12:25 a.m. Friday and encountered heavy smoke and flames in the rear of the house, according to a news release.
Crews forced entry into the home and attacked the flames, which had heavily damaged a portion of the rear of the one story house, including the kitchen area and a back porch.
After the blaze was put out, firefighters discovered a man who was dead on the back porch of the home.
Investigators aren't sure if the victim was inside the home at the time of the fire or if he was outside when the flames erupted.
SFES investigators say the man suffered some burn injuries but the cause of death is undetermined at this time. An autopsy will be scheduled to determine the cause of death.
Fire officials say although they don’t believe the fire is suspicious in nature, they will continue their investigation in an effort to determine the cause of the fire.
