Garden City fire reignites, road remains open

A major structure fire has shut down Dean Forest Road in Garden City.

The fire broke out after 3 p.m. at the Shining Star used car dealership on Prosperity Drive.

Thick black smoke could be seen for miles and several area fire departments have responded to the scene.

Traffic in the area is snarled and you're urged to avoid the area.

The Savannah_Chatham County Public Schools reports about 75 students on buses who can’t get home due to the fire.

Those students are being taken to Garden City Elementary for reunification with their parents. Parents have been notified by SCCPSS transportation department.

Stephanie Olson saw the explosions up close, and said she couldn't even think straight.

"There were literally shards of metal flying through the air, it was kind of insane," Olson said.

Garden City Fire Chief Corbin Medeiros said his team worked together with Southside Fire, Savannah Fire, and Pooler Fire to put out the blaze.

It's great to see that multiple departments are working together to help make the community more safer," he said.

Crews returned to the scene at 10:20 p.m. Thursday night after firefighters say another car ignited in the lot. Dean Forest Road did not close when the car reignited.
