A new initiative is working to invest in Savannah's environment and economy by opening the state's first cleantech incubator.

CleanTech Campus is opening the incubator at a new facility off President Street.

The incubator is part of the SeaPoint Industrial Terminal Complex.

Tim Echols, Georgia's Public Service Commissioner stopped by Wednesday to tour the newly-renovated facility.

"In a couple of years, this building is going to be bustling with entrepreneurs," said Echols.

The 60,000 square foot building will soon be fueling the future of clean businesses in Savannah.

"It's about 80% lab space, 20% office space, but a number of those spaces can be converted to allow for more tenants and more companies here," said Carmen Bergman, director of community affairs for Delaney Industries, the parent company of SeaPoint.

Any company or organization that is working to advance clean technology in manufacturing or logistics can apply for office space, free for one year. Tenants can utilize existing labs as well as a shared conference room and a common kitchen. Educational programming, mentorship opportunities, free parking and 24/7 security are also available.

"Providing space to work is one of the most important things that a young scientist or entrepreneur needs. Laboratory space, ability to take apart something, put together something, develop something, leave it there, you can't do it at your kitchen table necessarily," said Echols.

He says the impact this project could generate is immeasurable.

"Who knows, maybe it's the new electric vehicle charging technology, maybe it's the next efficient solar panel, the next hot water controller, or some water-saving device or some organism that helps in anaerobic digestion," Echols said.

It's an effort to start and keep clean companies here in the Hostess City.

SeaPoint is taking applications from clean companies who’d like to use the free office space on a rolling basis. Click here to learn more.
