Savannah, Ga. (WTGS FOX28) — The Consolidation Implementation Committee (CIC) for Armstrong State University and Georgia Southern University finalized the academic structure for the new Georgia Southern University on Wednesday.
The structure will consist of nine colleges: the Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering and Computing, the College of Arts and Humanities, the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Education, the Waters College of Health Professions, the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health, the College of Science and Mathematics, and the Jack N. Averitt College of Graduate Studies.
Some committee members did not like the idea of splitting up the arts, humanities, and behavioral and social sciences college.
After a heated debate at the May 10 meeting, GSU president, Jamie Herbert tabled the discussion for this meeting, giving those who had concerns an opportunity to voice their opinions.
The committee could not reach a consensus on the structure Wednesday, so President Herbert called for a vote: 15 for the nine colleges, 11 for eight.
President Herbert said in the meeting the committee could not move forward with continuing to populate the entire organizational structure until the academic structure was in place.
Additional Operational Working Group (OWG) recommendations also were approved in a variety of areas including faculty development, honors programs and undergraduate research, international programs and study abroad, research services and sponsored programs, admissions, orientation and family programs, athletics, public relations and media, social media, student conduct and academic integrity, preserving traditions and history, and leadership, and volunteer programs.
Georgia Southern will host the next CIC meeting on June 7.
